Gemstone Industry Struggles with Unrest in Pakistan

The country’s gem and jewelery exports have boomed in recent years but Taliban violence, a crippling power crisis and outdated production methods are taking their toll in Peshawar, where traders say business has slumped alarmingly in the past 12 months.

As dusk settles over Peshawar the stalls and narrow lanes of Namakmandi bazaar in the heart of the city bustle with activity.

Traders peer beadily to check the quality of emeralds, rubies and lapis lazuli, plying customers with green tea while food sellers roam about, the aroma of spices scenting the air.

But traders like Shehzad Sabz Ali say business is collapsing, and foreign buyers in particular have been scared off – a major problem in a sector where exports account for 95 percent of the market.

"I have been in this business for the last 25 years but the slump that we are witnessing these days because of unrest is unprecedented", he told AFP.

The buyers from the United States, Thailand, France, Germany and Dubai who once thronged the packed market are largely a thing of the past.

"The bomb blasts and suicide attacks have turned our businesses upside down, leaving us no option but to interact with our buyers through the Internet," Ali said as employees in his small shop cut and polished delicate rose-pink kunzite stones.

Online dealing may be the thing of the moment, but traders like Ali, whose businesses have been built on generations of salesmanship and personal relationships, feel it is ineffective.

For fellow trader Sheharyar Ahmad, the solution is to hold more trade shows in other cities.

"I have attended a few exhibitions in Islamabad and Lahore where foreign buyers showed great deal of interest in the stones such as emerald, ruby and sapphire," he told AFP.

Most of the country’s gemstones are found in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, northern Gilgit-Baltistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Balochistan.

The reserves of precious and semi-precious stones in Pakistan are worth trillions of dollars, according to Peshawar-based gemologist Ilyas Ali Shah.

But much of this potential remains untapped as the stones lie buried in the seven restive tribal areas along the Afghan border, where militancy and poor infrastructure have restricted access.

"Pakistan could triple its current gemstone exports if these reserves are fully tapped," he said.

While the quality of stones is good and they sell well at international trade shows, Peshawar trader Sheharyar Ahmad said, the primitive cutting and polishing techniques are not up to international standards.

"That is why when our stones go to Thailand, they are re-faceted and polished again," he told AFP.

Shah, who heads the Gem and Jewelery Training and Manufacturing Centre in Peshawar, said the manual equipment Pakistani traders are still using did not allow the same precision and delicacy of workmanship as modern machinery.

His training centre aims to bring the country’s jewellery techniques up to date.

"Our institute has been set up to train traders in cutting and polishing of gemstones through scientific means and we have so far trained over 1,000 students in Peshawar,” he said.

The government-run Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company (PGJDC) is also trying to raise skill levels to allow the country to compete better with the likes of Thailand and India.

Gem and jewellery exports have risen enormously in recent years to stand at $1.3 billion in 2013, and PGJDC general manager Khalid Aziz said they were aiming for a target of $1.7 billion by 2017.

Different Type of Gemstones in Pakistan

Pakistan, our country is one of the richest countries in the world with respect to minerals such as precious diamond, gold, gemstones, and natural fuel etc. Pakistan got independence from British rule on 14th August, 1947. Before the independence of Pakistan, the rulers of this piece of land were Britishers, or Hindus, or different Muslims, who ruled this area. They were very reluctant to extract gemstones and use them as jewels and trade them to increase their economy. Even this piece of land was so valuable because of its quality in gemstone production so it attracted different rulers to come and conquer it. This land increased their greed for gems and diamonds. There are a lot of gemstones that were mined in this region and it even dates back to the ancient Indus valley civilization and Gandhara civilization. One of the main causes of the Greek invasion of this region was due to its riches in gemstones.  Even Mughals came here for mining of minerals and gemstones. The main reason for the British occupation of sub-continent was due to the fact that this region which is now called Pakistan is rich in minerals and especially gemstones; and in fact all the rulers who ruled and tried to conquer this land, they only wanted its riches and gems.

Among all the precious and valuable gemstones that are mined in Pakistan, the most important gems are Beryl. This is a family of precious crystals. Apart from Pakistan, they are found in Brazil, Afghanistan, Canada, Zambia, Colombia, and Madagascar. But they are found in a good quantity in Pakistan. Another crystal is Corundum which comes from Ruby family. They are the hardest and toughest gemstones and they are simply beautiful. Their beauty makes them expensive and rare in the market. Other precious and valuable crystals and gemstones that are found in Pakistan are Diamonds, Emerald, Peridote, and Tourmaline. Their rareness and vulnerability makes them the most expensive and valuable gemstones of Pakistan and probably the whole world.

There is almost every kind of gemstone that is found in Pakistan. There are all kinds, for example there are rare gemstones minerals that are only found in Pakistan, there are many vulnerable gems that are found in excess in Pakistan and the rest of the world has them in rare quantity. There are also many minerals found in Pakistan that are found all over the world for example Mineral Salt, Margarine, Aquamarine, and Actinolite etc. But fortunately, these all kinds and types of gemstones and minerals are found all over the Pakistan, means they are found in all terrains of Pakistan; from rocky Baluchistan to windy and wet coastal areas; from the deserts of Thal and Thar to the plains of Punjab; from the valleys of Kashmir to the height of the mountain ranges of Karakorum, Himalaya, and Hindukush. Minerals and gemstones are everywhere and Pakistan is blessed from this wealth.

Quartz gemstone is also a valuable and expensive crystal after Diamond. It is mined and extracted in different types in Pakistan. The most common type is known as mountain Quartz. As the name says, it is found in the mountains. Pakistan’s mountain ranges are rich in minerals and gemstones and they are quite rich in mountain Quartz. Quartz crystal is the transformer of energy, which is why they are used up in different electrical components and are also used to communicate. Quartz crystals are buried deep within the Earth. Miners dig them and take them up. It is being extracted for almost ten thousand years; still it is considered as a vulnerable mineral gemstone. Like any other gemstone, Quartz is also extracted in many kinds.

There are many other kinds of Quartz crystal. One of them is known as Smoky Quartz. Its chemical formula is SiO2. It varies from black to brown. Apart from Pakistan, it is found in Africa, Scotland, Colorado USA, Brazil, and Switzerland. It is used extensively in making of jewellery. Another type of Quartz crystal is Rutilated Quartz. They range from light brown to pale greyish or red colour. They are very rare and they are expensive crystals, and they are used by watch making brands to manufacture watches. Rose Quartz is another type of Quartz crystal that is present abundantly in Pakistan. It is also known as love stone. Amethyst is also a Quartz crystal and it is found in Pakistan only. But some of its kinds are also present in Brazil, Zambia, Uruguay, Mexico, and some countries of Europe; but they are not as good as extracted and mined in Pakistan. Citrine is a Quartz crystal that is found in Pakistan. They are used to make watches. Vogel crystals and Lemurian Seed crystals are also a Quartz crystal type. They are used extensively by watch manufacturing companies such as Rolex and Omega.

There are more than a hundred kinds of gemstones that are mined in Pakistan. Almost every part of this beautiful and blessed country is rich in gemstones. If the leaders and government sector pays more attention towards this industry, then economy of Pakistan will flourish and it will lead to the betterment for the people of Pakistan.

Areas of Gemstones Mining in Pakistan

Like all other important and vulnerable minerals that are found all over the world, Pakistan is one of the biggest and most prominent producers of minerals and gemstones. Some of them are rare in world, but they are in a huge quantity in Pakistan, all because of Pakistan’s ideal location. Important gems that are found and mined in Pakistan are Actinolite, Hessonite, Rodingite, Agate, Idocrase, Rutile, Aquamarine, Jadeite, Ruby, Amazonite, Kunzite, Serpentine, Azurite, Kyanite, Spessartine also known as Garnet, Beryl, Marganite, Spinel, Emerald, Moonstone, Topaz, Epidote, Pargasite, Tourmaline, Garnet also known as Alamandine, Peridot, Turqoise, Grossular, Vesuvianite and the most important gemstone which is used ruthlessly in the watch making industry is Quartz (Citrine and etc).

Although each and every gemstone that is found in Pakistan helps to maintain economy of our country, but there are many gemstones that are rare in the world which immensely helps Pakistan to become an important gemstones country in the world along with building economy. For instance, take the example of Quartz. It is a very important crystal which is found in a huge quantity in Pakistan. This crystal or gemstone is rare in other parts of the world but Pakistan has it in a numerous quantity. Other important gemstones that exist in Pakistan and provide a large amount of budget to Pakistan’s economy are Aquamarine, Garnet, Beryl, Peridot, Turquoise, Ruby, Serpentine and Emerald etc. These gemstones also exist in other parts of the world. But they are more in quantity in Pakistan than any other country. They also help our country’s economy graph to rise up.

Pakistan is a very rich country with respect to the mining of gemstones and minerals. Pakistan has made itself an important supplier in the international market of gemstones with supplying almost every kind of gemstone and minerals. In general, the whole land and soil of Pakistan is enriched with minerals and gemstones. Like no other part of the world, the whole Pakistani land is rich in mineral treasure especially in precious, vulnerable, and valuable gemstones. Gemstones that are found all over Pakistan are pure, valuable, expensive, rare, and vulnerable. Some of them are only found in Pakistan in the entire world; which makes Pakistan the richest and the most blessed country with respect to gemstones, in the entire world.

Pakistani land comprises of all kinds of terrains. In the West there is dry rocky mountainous terrain, in the South are deserts and sea, in the East are plains, in the South West is a huge Baluchistan plateau which is also rocky mountainous, and in the North there is a huge range of mountains which are the tallest and highest in the world. The Karakorum Range, Hindukush Range, and the Himalaya Range are known as the roof of the world. They stretch from North Western Afghanistan and central Asian border to the North Eastern Kashmir and Indian border; and in the extreme North, there is the Chinese border. Due to the mountainous topographical terrain of the Northern area of Pakistan, it is clear that this piece of land will be rich in gemstones and minerals. As these mountain ranges in the North of Pakistan are young mountain ranges, dating back to few million years, they contain fresh gemstones; hence making them more vulnerable and valuable.

Gemstone mining is an important business in Pakistan. It has become one of the biggest and most important industries of Pakistan. There are many kinds of minerals that are found and mined in Pakistan. These minerals include coal, gold, chromites, copper, salt, bauxite, and etc. Pakistan’s government has created an authority which is responsible for the development of minerals and gemstones. It is known as Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) and it is responsible for the development and mining of minerals and gemstones in Pakistan. This association also take cares the interest of stake holders and share holders in mineral and gemstone mining and it also cleans and polishes as an official entity. All four provinces of Pakistan are rich in gemstone mining. But the richest province is the province of Baluchistan. Baluchistan is considered as the richest province in the world with respect to minerals and gemstones. . Province of Sind is also a very important province as recently, it has been discovered that the land of Sind has the biggest coal reserves in Asia. Plus it also contains precious gemstones. The province of Khyber Pakhtoon Khuan is the richest province of Pakistan with respect to gemstone mining, and many gemstones are found in this province. The province of Gilgit Baltistan is also a very rich province as many minerals along with gems are found in this province. The province of Punjab is also known in the world for its gems and minerals. In the valley of Khewra, there exist the largest natural mineral salt mine in the world along with different crystals and gems. Hence the whole Pakistan is rich in gemstone mining.

There is not a single mile in Pakistan where you cannot find a shop or a business related with gemstones. So, Pakistan is not a limited country with respect to gemstones. If any multinational company seek the opportunity of investing in Pakistan’s gemstones; then it will not be a bad idea. After all Pakistan is the largest country with such an ideal location on world’s map which posse’s all this fortune.
